The Season of Gede
A Masterclass on the principal functions and impact on our lives of the source from which we all draw life, strength and heritage - the Gede of Haitian Vodou - the 'dead' - the Ancestors! Those who have gone before us and yet remain accessible to us in every breath, thought, invocation and ritual.
November 1st & 2nd mark 'Fet Gede' in Haiti, with nationwide celebrations for the departed, Vodou's expression unlike the Mexican 'Day of the dead' or the Catholics All-Saints Day.
A sacred pedagogy will be delivered by Prof Mama Bayyinah Bello on why the Gede are such an important feature in Vodou Cosmology, their manifestations in our personalities and how we cultivate a deeper knowledge and connection with this family of LOA (Forces of Nature).
In honour of the Gede, the show will commemorate the decisive battle of Vertières that secured the victory of the Independence war; 222 years this year!
Mama Bayyinah will be delivering a profound exposition on the role of the Gedes in this monumental victory, as particularly embodied in the figure of General François Capois (Capois Lamort) and the charge he led that despirited the French army to surrender.
